The cottage has a small garden area with a walled courtyard. This year we have added railings to the top of the wall which is planted up spring bulbs and flowers.
The door from the sitting room leads onto the courtyard with a table, chairs and bench to enjoy a drink in the late afternoon and watch the village life go by. You may meet our neighbours in the village, do say hello to them, they know the area well.
The planting in the front garden has lots of shrubs and roses which will be growing over the cottage. Rob is our gardener and you may see him during your stay. He is developing the garden over this year so if you are coming back you will see the changes during the year. We are keen to retain the cottage garden feel in the limited space. A large unsafe Ash tree has been removed and the wild space across the lane is going to be cut back this spring which will create more light and will help the garden flourish and we can grow more plants that like the sun.
We are keen to grow more flowers and shrubs that provide nectar and pollen as food for bees and other pollinators throughout the year. For example, primroses and crocuses in spring, lavenders, meadow cranesbill and ox-eye daisies in summer, ivy and hebes in autumn, and mahonia shrubs and cyclamen in winter. We just need more plants rich in pollen and nectar in our gardens and in the landscape around Uplyme and we aim to do our bit although on a small scale.
We have a small parking area for one car in front of the cottage and a gate which leads onto Venlake Lane. As we share the entrance with our neighbours the area is not enclosed.
We hope you enjoy the garden space.
