2020 Lyme Regis Beer festival

The Lyme Regis beer festival will return bigger than ever, with a celebration of more than 20 beers and 20 live acts across the Easter weekend.

Lyme Regis Brewery is gathering craft beers and ale from around the region, with a focus on showcasing local drinks now on offer in Dorset, Devon and Somerset. There will be both superb cask ales and kegged beers covering all tastes and styles.  Live music will also be playing across the town at the weekend with Town of Cats, Fromage En Feu, La Juega and Palooka 5, with local performers Raisin’ Cain, Lyme Morris and B Sharp all from Lyme Regis on the bill.

Local street food outfits will be serving food on Theatre Square cooking up the tastiest meals in Lyme Regis for hungry festival-goers.

The festival will be held over Easter weekend on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11, with entrance costing £5 per day.

The Monmouth Table

The Monmouth Table is a new popup restaurant who aim to bring seasonal and honest food from along the Jurassic Coast with pop up dining events cooked by chef Annie Coplestone and managed by Carlotta Paolieri.

We were passing by and saw the blackboard outside and popped in. Had a lovey chat with Carlotta and booked a table and it did not disappoint. The food, tapas style is just amazing and bursting with flavour and super fresh. This might be some of the best food in Lyme.

With a focus on cooking fish, making the most of the location and access to the freshest of hauls. They also cook beautiful, organic vegetables sourced from local farms to go with it. The small kitchen requires them to be as close to zero-waste as possible, which guarantees freshness, but also means that not everything on the menu may be available all night – so get it whilst it’s hot!

The Monmouth Table believes in freshly cooked food bursting with flavours and aims to provide an authentic and enjoyable atmosphere to share with your fellow diners. Find them at the weekend at the top of Broad Street

The Courtyard Cafe

The Courtyard Cafe offers a fusion of flavours from world travel, nutrition and years of good experience. They offer a warm and friendly welcome and intend to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable.

Go and visit them for a variety of cooked breakfasts, morning leaf teas and fresh coffee, delicious homemade cakes, wholesome lunches and afternoon teas in the delightful 12th-century cobblestone courtyard at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis.

They source the produce as locally as possible, recycle 80% of their waste, use the flour from The Town Mill to make Bread, Cakes, Pastries and Scones. Everything on the menu is cooked from fresh ingredients from scratch and is totally authentic. They also served the biggest slice of vegan chocolate cake we have seen.

They are very happy to accept well-behaved dogs in the cafe and courtyard areas, but please be mindful of other customers who do not have the same affinity for canines! The outside eating area is a no smoking zone!

It’s small so book or come early to avoid disappointment, off the beaten track but worth finding.

Cellar 59

If you are walking down Broad Street or coming back from the beach and feeling in need of a drink, a great place to visit is Cellar 59.  A hidden gem, this is not a brewery chain or a place for loud music and food that’s been messed around with, but just great beer in an amazing space.

Go down the steps into the cellar under the solicitor and surveyors and just up from the Royal Lion.  Here you will find more locals than tourists at the bar and 13 plus beers on tap as well as cider and wines.  I recommend the ‘flight of thirds’ where you can try 3 ‘third of a pint’ glasses of your choice.  My family think it’s a dangerous place!  They have a bookshelf if you plan on a long visit and board games, Chess and cards & draughts available to play on the tables.

There are four hand pumps to pour cask ale and ten keg taps delivering beer directly from the Keg Shed.  The beer is sourced from breweries that do not use finings (isinglass), or from those who are brave enough to give it a try and break from the tradition of using fish products in their beer, a lucky additional bonus this approach makes the beer suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Gluten intolerant people will be delighted to find that they can often offer at least 5 different gluten-free beers.

The bottle shop contains bottles and cans and 9-pint kegs so if you are planning on staying in then you can enjoy some great beer.

The Galley Café

The Galley Café brings a touch of its owner’s own relaxed surf chic to Lyme Regis. The Snug, an extended seating area, and regular live music and poetry nights have proved a hit.

Reputedly serves the best breakfasts in town, with the ‘Full Montgomery’ and its selection of locally sourced bacon, sausages and eggs proving a winner.

Almost every item on offer in the café, from the best-selling Guinness cake to the wide selection of savoury flatbreads, is made fresh on the premises. In fact, the only things not born and bred in Dorset are the Cornish pasties, which come courtesy of the award-winning Posh Pasty Company and are baked in-house each morning.

In addition to take away, the Galley also offers a broad lunchtime menu,  a freshly-baked baguette with your favourite choice of filling, or (depending on the season) a warming stew or summery salad.

The Galley boasts a traditional Italian-style coffee machine and source its beans from neighbours and coffee fanatics, a carefully chosen selection of wines, as well as some of best ciders from the region are also available.

With both children and dogs welcome, the Galley’s comfy sofas are the perfect place to recharge after a busy morning on the beach or out fossiling.
